Then another quick sanding, and then I was ready to paint. Any of these products will need to be protected from UV. The big thing for me in this type of work is time. The painters call me out, generally on the same day they want to paint. So I like the Minwax for that (but not the Elmers – because it stayed plastic way too long) because it sets up pretty fast.
General Finishes Flat Out Flat topcoat is a great topcoat too. I am very new to the furniture refinishing game. My friend who is more experienced uses Minwax Polycrylic and that is what I have been using. I am amazed how smoothly it goes on with a sponge. We cut them up into 4ths or 8ths with a bread knife and then use them to apply the poly.
Hardwax Oil Vs Polyurethane
After several years all the posts still look as good as the day I repaired them. Note – General Finishes also has an oil based stain line, I have yet to try it. Once I like something I tend to stick with it – Minwaxis what I used most often for oil based stain. I have many customers who are in a rush to move into their new home, but I always recommend that it’s worth delaying move in by a few days and get their floors done right. If they don’t, they will spend more time and money paying for this later.
You can apply less than the suggested amount and you might get a little bit of chipping. (Remember, it’s unpredictable!) If you apply the suggested amount of bonding agent and sand your piece, you won’t have any chipping. It can be a tad bit unpredictable if minwax vs varathane you’re applying it without the bonding agent on pre-finished wood. It’s difficult to know just how much it will chip until you actually apply it. I always lightly sand all of my furniture pieces, and I would recommend doing the same, even with chalk paint.

Usually, water based jobs can be done in 2 days and you can walk on it that night; oil based can take 3-5 days and you need to wait at least 24 hrs before walking on them. But, for regular homeowners, usually, it’s worth waiting the extra 2-3 days in order to have the job last longer. And, at those points in time, the water based poly looks way worse than the oil based – in fact, it’s usually peeling off and the hardwood is starting to look gray.

Any bubbles will need to be sanded out before applying the next coat. It takes a while for oil-based polyurethane to dry. The temperature and humidity levels can affect the drying times. This fast-drying polyurethane can be recoated after 3-4 hours. It needs another 24 hours before it’s ready for “light use”. What I do understand, is when Wikipedia says polyurethane finishes for wood are “typically hard, abrasion-resistant, and durable coatings”.
Yep, this is what I found after searching forever the find a can of Kona stain sonwe cod match the mantle we built to other wood in the house. I did end up finding some rustoleum Kona from amazon and just getting that but the rustoleum website now lists the varathane products. Might be worth it to try those since you liked the rustoleum so much. Then you can paint with latex right over the top. I know I’ve mentioned this before and you’re skeptical of the hardness of wax finishes. 🙂 Might be worth at least trying on a sample piece of wood, maybe for a future project if you’ve already headed out and had oil paint mixed.
If you’re worried about the fumes, a respirator mask would be a great idea. However, when possible, try to use this product in a ventilated area. You can add a fan facing out of the room or open a few windows minwax vs varathane too. If you cannot properly ventilate the site, make sure it’s clear of other people without a mask before applying. Perhaps you want a finish that will make the room feel more open and brighter.
Varathane Weathered Gray Stain
I’d never used it before this project, seeing it as an unnecessary step and added cost. However, I’m sure it’s the reason all of our stain went on so smoothly this time despite using inexpensive soft wood. Apply tinted stain to one area at a time using a brush – for example one board at a time. Let sit for a few minutes then wipe off with a lint free cloth or rag. Let dry according to directions on the package.

Chemistry Of Polycrylic Vs Polyurethane
Arguably the biggest drawback to polyurethane is the number of toxic substances found in the product. It should be noted that polyurethane is also water-resistant, durable, and can withstand heat and cold with little damage. The advantages of polyurethane start with the smooth finish it provides, especially on surfaces that are quite hard or resilient such as metal or rubber. The amount of oil in spar urethane makes it softer and more pliable compared to polyurethane which tends to be quite hard when dried.
- To make your own whitewash stain, the ratio of paint to water that you use really depends on the look you want.
- To avoid drips that can ruin a perfectly good floor, shelf, or any other wooden whatnot that’s not on the slate to be stained, use Minwax Gel Stain.
- It’s also important that the area is dust-free.
- Both are protective top coats used for wood projects.
It adheres to the raw wood nicely and holds up well. You definitely need to prep your furniture piece well before painting. I would recommend sanding and priming with a good, strong primer (this one is my favorite primer for furniture!) which is time consuming. Here’s an entire post devoted to priming furniture before painting.
